Hello…

Black and white image of a woman observing two birds perched on a suspended branch, with birds flapping wings, chain visible above.

I'm Chloe, an end of life doula, death educator, and writer. You can find my essays over at Death & Birds, where I've been writing about mortality and the natural world for the past few years. I also have the great fortune of caring for orphaned and injured birds at a wildlife rescue centre — that's me in the photo, getting yelled at by a couple of adolescent Swallows.

Birds have been important teachers to me. The way in which they occupy the present tense has shaped how I understand mortality more than most of the books I've read. Working with them keeps me in proximity to a sense of wonder and awe that I hold very dear.

My path into death work is a long one, perhaps beginning as early as age three with the loss of my mother. Wrestling with mortality from such a young age fostered a curiosity that has never left me. For a long time I struggled to separate grief from death, though I now understand grief as more closely related to love, an understanding that has given me the courage to move toward both rather than away from them.

Every death I have encountered, personally or professionally, has deepened my conviction that life is an extraordinary and unrepeatable gift. My reverence for it, and my respect for the dying process, make me well-suited as a doula. I approach my work with people at the end of their lives with great seriousness and care, knowing that dying is a journey we take only once.

I've also come to understand the immense value of meeting our mortality long before crisis demands it, and that a genuine relationship with death, developed over time, consistently leads people back to a fuller, more honest engagement with being alive. Much of my work now lives in that rich territory.

I'm a proud member of EOL Doula UK, through which I have the pleasure of mentoring other end of life doulas.
